Writing 201: Future

Day 10 has arrived: let’s end the course with a bang. Sonnets, chiasmus, the future — en garde!
prompt: future
form: sonnet
device: chiasmus

You came two months earlier, we were worried at first
But then you have 10 fingers, 10 toes; our little bundle
Your hair sticks like a hedgehog, you have my eyes
Your dad’s nose, you pointed with your lips like your lolo

Karate, football, kung fu, guitar, you went through them
I didn’t mind being your taxi from one activity to the next
You have lots of friends, sometimes they stayed the night
You said no alcohol, no cigarettes in contrast with your friends

Soon you left for college, we were sad at first
With skype, text messages, emails and wats up
You kept us updated and we could tell you’re happy

The world is your oyster, the future in your hands
What’s next we never know; we don’t know what’s next
We’re always behind you and we’re so proud of you, son

Writing 201: Landscape

Day 9. That can only mean one thing: let’s make a list. With a pair of scissors and a map.
Prompt: landscape
Form: found poetry
Device: enumeratio

landscape

We wandered through the hills one day
The road went up and up and curved around
Sunshine, smile and heaven’s blue lake
Jagged winds shake the beloved blossoms
Such pleasure to see some massive trees
Leaves for smooth and bark for rough
Leaves and bark may soon be tree enough
The world is full of joyful and great things
Like that stone that saunters in the road
Or the wind caressing or hugging wild flowers
Asters, bellflowers, pinks and stonecrops
Gentians, buttercups, lilies and violets
Bees and butterflies flutter around
Squirrels and hedgehogs on the road
Gorgeous summer and colourful autumn
Such splendour or grandeur to behold
Calmness broad upon the mountains
At evening when the cerise summit
Of sunset passes down the West
A string of stillness all over

Him Indoors and Me

Writing 201: Fingers
It’s Day 7. Time to think about vowels, with your fingers. Prosaically.
Prompt: fingers
Form: prose poetry
Device: assonance

Him Indoors plays the piano well
I like to listen to him as he plays
Be it a Chopin or a Beethoven
He can make it sound very well
Like he’s always serenading me

He also has a green finger
A good gardener he is and he knows it
He plants seeds, mostly chillis and impatiens
Our garden full of dahlias, lavender, sweet peas
He doesn’t mind getting his fingers dirty and muddy

And as for me, I like typing my blog
I may not use all my fingers, just the two
But I can type fast and hope the words come
So I’m keeping my fingers crossed
That all’s well that ends well

From Narda to Darna

Writing 201: Hero(ine)
Grab your verse by both ends (or hands; your call), like a hero with extra big hair.
Week 2 here we go!
prompt: hero(ine)
form: ballad
device: anaphora/epistrophe

DarnaOrosco

In a land not so far away, a girl named Narda
The orphan girl Narda with young brother Ding
Found a white stone on her walk by the woods
It was a tiny meteorite from outer space
They chose her to be the super woman
Because of her pure heart to defend the earth
And when she swallowed the white stone
She turned to Darna with all the super power

This orphan girl Narda turned to super Darna
Just by swallowing the stone and shouting Darna
She’s got super strength, super speed and telekinesis
Her skin has a high level of invulnerability
The ruby in her helmet and her bracelet deflect bullets
She’s here to save earth, this orphan girl Narda
Who turned to super Darna by shouting Darna
She’s Darna of the Planet Marte

We follow her every escapade and battle
Fighting Valentina, the dreadful female snake
Or Pusang Itim, the cat who threatens the world
She met Captain Barbell on one of her journeys
Captain Barbell is also a good hero saving the earth
And so this orphan girl Narda, who turned to super Darna
Fell in love for the first time with Captain Barbell
And together they save the earth from the evil intruders

Writing 201: Fog

Day 5 is upon us: clear your foggy mind, embrace absence, and paint with words.
prompt: fog           form: elegy             device: metaphor

russian-music-elegy-edit

Dad, you left us so suddenly
Not even 60, that was young
You carried the world on your shoulders
And thought you were superman
With never ending super power strength
Funny how we pay our debts
What comes around goes around
And as we drown our sorrows
Life goes on in a spin
Your children miss you
Like plants in need of water and care
Your grandchildren too young
To remember you, what they’re left
Their foggy memory of you

Tiger, Tiger!!!

Tiger, tiger you’re astonishing
The sight of you made me marvel
With open mouth and wide eyes
I truly can’t believe I’m seeing you
Such brilliant creature in this jungle

It took us two days of jeep safari
The first afternoon we observed other animals
Antelopes, peacocks, parakeets, deer
Loved them, too but we didn’t come here for them
We crossed half the world waiting for you

The next morning, quite so early
The jeep came to fetch us, still yawning
Bouncing up and down the rough terrain
Taking photos of different birds and monkeys
Took a different gate this time, I think it was Gate 2

Tiger, tiger, I thought we were not going to spot you
A couple of hours and we were still driving in this forest
Up and down, quite a site of the mountain range
Got talking to the couple beside me
They were going to Goa after the tour

But lo and behold, other jeeps in one place
That was a good sign, wasn’t it?
They were gazing in the middle of the meadow
There! There it is! Pointed the girl
We all stared in amazement and there you were

Tiger, tiger, you were worth the wait
Such gorgeousness, such elegance and grace
The whole field your recreational area
And look who was coming to play with you
Your brother as elegant as you

Two splendid tigers in one morning
Such a breathtaking experience
Two dynamic tigers in the grassland
Playing, messing around
The whole world to themselves

Tigers, tigers you were the greatest
I won’t stop thinking about the two of you
Highlight of our holiday
You and the Taj Mahal
India in my heart

Writing 201: Trust

Today’s word is trust: write a poem in which you address, reflect on, or tell a story about the feeling of trusting or being trusted by another (person, animal, object, potted plant…). Or about distrusting them (or not being trusted yourself).

How I love thee
I trust you completely
My rock, my shoulder, my strength

Indeed we are together
Now and forever, I hope
Devoted to each other
Over the moon and far away
Or I’m lost without you
Reminiscing the experience we share
Super duper they are and really appreciate them

Trust the dust to be in the crust
I forgot to make the pancake when I was awake
It was a blustery Tuesday yesterday

Gawk at the frocks at the parade
Cheerful carnival with their dirndl
Fun at the pun as the son spun

Writing 201: Journey

Today’s word prompt is journey. Write a poem about anything that word evokes for you, from the excitement of a trip you’re about to embark on, the mental progress you witnessed someone make, or the struggles, pleasures, and extreme emotions that travel can bring about.

India 557

Just arrived from our trip in India
Where we have seen a lot of flora and fauna
The highlight was the tigers in the jungle
They were so beautiful and agile
They were so at home in the savanna

The traffic in Delhi was terrible
But the people were very cheerful
The curries and chillis were quite hot
Being there was like winning a jackpot
No hassle and everything was zestful

Now we’re thinking of the next holiday
Where we can have a breakaway
From the pressure of working
To stop us from ageing
We can also drive in a highway
