Freedom by Helen Hunt Jackson

What freeman knoweth freedom? Never he
Whose father’s father through long lives have reigned
O’er kingdoms which mere heritage attained.
Though from his youth to age he roam as free
As winds, he dreams not freedom’s ecstacy.
But he whose birth was in a nation chained
For centuries; where every breath was drained
From breasts of slaves which knew not there could be
Such thing as freedom,–he beholds the light
Burst, dazzling; though the glory blind his sight
He knows the joy. Fools laugh because he reels
And weilds confusedly his infant will;
The wise man watching with a heart that feels
Says: “Cure for freedom’s harms is freedom still.”

What are you thankful for today?

I am thankful for freedom and for all the men and women who fought for our freedom.

index

How do we remember the men we’ve lost?
How can we tell them they’re still being missed?
That every day, especially on this crisp autumn day
Their memories still linger and they’re not forgotten
That what they’ve done are truly appreciated
Would wearing poppies and lighting candles do?

Lest we forget, lest we forget

Men of valour and courage going to war
Every generation, there are some reasons
Of why men waged wars against each other
We send them there, some still boys and girls
Not knowing whether they’d still come back
The experience they’ve got, we don’t really know
And when they come back, are they still whole?
Our heroes, our loved ones, their sacrifices

Lest we forget, lest we forget

And so we remember them
We appreciate what they’ve done
To our countries and to our freedom
Wars are ugly, wars are unfair and wars are ruthless
But then they are necessary sometimes
Let’s just hope that peace and understanding come

Lest we forget, lest we forget

Argument – Daily Prompt

geometric2

She was groping for the words which would express what she thought. She closed her eyes, hazel in colour and thought of him. Ah, memories like some classical texts were adapted for apothegms and imagery. They used to walk along the Champs-Elysees, his arm draped around her shoulders as she sidled up to him. The prism of the Louvre made her thought of their arguments and at the same time the potency of their affair. Like leopards in the cage, they’ve got to be released. It was getting too complicated, thus, a mutual decision to end the affair that was.

B&P’s Shadorma & Beyond – Autumn Rain by DH Lawrence – October 1, 2016

world-war-1-photo

autumn cry
dark clouds on the sky
blood and tears
of sorrow
men fighting for our freedom
remembering them

falling rain
echoes of autumn
fields of men
sheaves of pain
in their bravery and nerve
falling one by one

Write the World: July Prompt – Revolution

together we fight for freedom
together we overcome
we have to be free
colonisation from Spain
battle till the end
independence is worth it
for generations to come

enemies attack
warriors defend precious soil
battle of the sea
great ancestors of the land

courageous people
defending sea till the end
freedom protected
the fruit of their hardship

they fought for our freedom
learning the past through art
at the gallery

country’s history
as part of our heritage
should know them by heart

women took part, too
Philippine Revolution
our own heroines

acknowledging them
they struggle for our freedom
we’re so proud of them

I long to fly in the sky
to soar up the cliffs with the others
free me from the bondage of poverty
rift the cage so I can get out to freedom
cart me out to a world where I’m welcome
free me from hunger as seen from my rickety legs
I’m all flesh and bones, so please give me some bread
I’m baffled – why can’t I be just like any ordinary child?
the absence of responsibilities, worries and hardship
to be able to sustain a world full of innocence and fun
being able to chatter instead of stuttering in fright
give me love and I can understand that in any language

MINIATURE WRITING CHALLENGE #48 – Burnt Out

replace-burnout

Life is tough, sometimes people work too hard
Too hard that they put a lot of pressure
To themselves and the others around them
No fight, no desire and the goal was marred

Too much to take, the whole system was jarred
Without inner fire, what’s there to live for?
When everything seems to be affected
Life is tough, sometimes people work too hard

Take care, we have to be always on guard
Balance is the answer to all questions
Set our priorities right, change our lives
No fight, no desire and the goal was marred

Life is tough, sometimes people work too hard
Search our souls, we know when something’s not right
No fight, no desire and the goal was marred

Walk Away

walk away me boys, walk away
before it’s too late and you die
you fight and play till the grey day
high time you think till I say bye

before it’s too late and you die
it’s no fun when everyone’s gone
high time you think till I say bye
if you go, will you still see dawn?

it’s no fun when everyone’s gone
I’ll definitely miss you, boys
if you go, will you still see dawn?
and those weapons were never toys

I’ll definitely miss you, boys
you fight and play till the grey day
and those weapons were never toys
walk away, me boys, walk away

Oh We’re Not Gonna Take It!

Dragons

Evil King Badinoff has issued an edict saying that all dragons must be “properly licensed”, must buy their sulfur supplements from 1 of 3 officially sanctioned stores, must pay a nuisance tax, and must not be seen on public streets between the hours of 9 PM and 9 AM. Dragons who break the rules will be hunted down and they and their families will have their heads mounted on King Badinoff’s throne room walls.

OH WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT
NO, WE AIN’T GONNA TAKE IT
OH WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE

WE’VE GOT THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE AND
THERE AIN’T NO WAY WE’LL LOSE IT
THIS IS OUR LIFE, THIS IS OUR SONG
WE’LL FIGHT THE POWERS THAT BE JUST
DON’T PICK OUR DESTINY ‘CAUSE
YOU DON’T KNOW US, YOU DON’T BELONG

OH WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT
NO, WE AIN’T GONNA TAKE IT
OH WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE

OH YOU’RE SO CONDESCENDING
YOUR GALL IS NEVER ENDING
WE DON’T WANT NOTHIN’, NOT A THING FROM YOU
YOUR LIFE IS TRITE AND JADED
BORING AND CONFISCATED
IF THAT’S YOUR BEST, YOUR BEST WON’T DO

The Council of Dragons from the Bundok decided their protest song against Evil King Badinoff, “We’re Not Gonna Take It Anymore”. They’ve had enough. They were not really the bad dragons; in fact, they were doing their share in helping the community. For instance, GINTO is the champion against evil and foul play. He helps the people when they were being robbed in the streets or when some anomalies were done to them. They can always rely on him. PILAK heals the injured, helps the meek and the lowly. As for KOBRE, he’s an incorrigible prankster, he tells jokes and riddles and the people love him. TANSO loves talking to people. He spends hours and hours entertaining them with some anecdotes and stories and if people have time to debate on some issues, he’d be happy to be on the other side of the debate. The leader of the Dragons, TANSONG PULA has a strong sense of justice and doesn’t tolerate cruelty. They don’t really know what they’ve done to deserve this bad treatment from the evil King.

Don’t Let Evil Win

see-hear-speak-no-evil

“The world is a dangerous place to live
Not because of the people who are evil but
because of the people who don’t do anything about it”
Albert Einstein’s quote is a wonderful quote
Makes us wrestle with our memories
Whether we are acting on its saintly cue
Cracking the code, holding the true meaning
Or tracking down the science behind it
We know we’re not angels and we do react
To different situations in varied ways
But what Einstein is trying to tell us is
To be responsible and look after each one
If we see something evil being done
We don’t just stand there and watch
We have to do something about it
We have to see to it that we are not
Just passive onlookers and self-centred
Don’t let evil win, be active and do it right

Teddy Bear for Baby Ella

baby-girl-cuddling-pink-teddy-bear-home-26104834

The wind howled through the window. I huddle my knees waiting for the storm to be over. Normally, it doesn’t bother me, I just slept through it. But tonight, the wind doesn’t just howl, it screams. The rain doesn’t just fall; it is powerful, hard and torrential. My normal teenage bravado has evaporated, whatever. I’ve got to go to my Mum for a cuddle, to hear her soothing words and everything would be fine again. I was about to knock on their door, when I heard them fighting or arguing. I quietly went back to my room.

I wonder what it is this time. Is Dad leaving us again? Will Mum let him go? Are we going to be miserable again? The last time this scene happened, Dad left us in the morning. He hugged us and told us to be good and look after each other. That one day he would come back, he hoped. We cried, we didn’t want him to go. Mum pretended to be busy feeding Baby Ella. She told us to get ready for school, as if nothing happened. That was the most miserable three months in my life.

Jake started bedwetting. Poor him, so frightened to go to his room because the monster was waiting for him under his bed. Baby Ella was teething, so she cried all the time. Mum didn’t know what to do with her. She would take her out in her pram for a long walk. Mum tried her best to make things as normal as possible. She would nag us to do our homework, to tidy our rooms, to tell us off when we’re watching too much telly. But in the evenings, I would hear her sobbing in her room.

And as for me, I seemed to have grown up so fast. I had to look after the little ones and tried to help Mum in her house chores. I played with Jake and read him some bedtime stories before he went to bed. I took Baby Ella for a walk when she started being fussy. But somehow, I couldn’t concentrate on my lessons, both in school and piano. My piano teacher told me that if I couldn’t master that Mozart piece, I wouldn’t be able to be in the concert. I seemed to be on a different planet and I burst out in tears upon any slight provocation.

We were getting used to our routine when Dad returned. We ran toward him, happy to see him again. He gave a football to Jake, a pocketbook to me and a teddy bear to Baby Ella. Mum stopped what she was doing, asked me to look after the little ones and they went to their room. They had a long conversation, complete with shouting and crying and in the end, they hugged and made up. Mum forgave Dad and Dad promised not to leave us again. It was like a happy ending in a story.

Life started to be normal and happy again in our house. Jake stopped bedwetting and joined our local football team. Baby Ella got some of her teeth and crawling everywhere. She was saying ma-ma and da-da and chuckling all the time. And as for me, I started having A’s again and also learning how to play the guitar. I played the Mozart piece in the concert and my family was among the audience. I joined the hip-hop dancing, too. We even planned our holiday this summer – we were going to Disneyland, Paris!

So as the trees creak and moan when their fine limbs are ripped away and the rain lashes outside my window, I huddle for them to stop – both the storm and the fighting or arguing from my parents. I ask for mercy and hope that normality comes back in the morning. I promise to be good all the time, just don’t break our family again.
