Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and modern art at the Stedelijk. Cycling is key to the city’s character, and there are 400km of cycle paths.
Octameter, created by Shelley A. Cephas, is a poem made up of 16 lines divided into two stanzas of 8 lines each. Each line has a syllable count of 5. The set rhyme scheme is: a/b/c/d/e/d/f/d g/h/c/g/i/g/d/d.
she tried to sleep
lots of things in mind
different masks for her
to be a Jane Doe
far away from truth
keep away from foe
she wants to be free
please keep her in toe
not an easy prey
nor an easy ride
life is such a blur
her hair sprayed grey
should get an armour
needle in a hay
no facade to show
no one has to know

That’s a great poem – oh, and I love Amsterdam. It’s high time I went back.
I had to re-word that last phrase; I originally wrote “it’s high time I took another trip,” but that could have been misconstrued 🙂
