Freedom by Helen Hunt Jackson

What freeman knoweth freedom? Never he
Whose father’s father through long lives have reigned
O’er kingdoms which mere heritage attained.
Though from his youth to age he roam as free
As winds, he dreams not freedom’s ecstacy.
But he whose birth was in a nation chained
For centuries; where every breath was drained
From breasts of slaves which knew not there could be
Such thing as freedom,–he beholds the light
Burst, dazzling; though the glory blind his sight
He knows the joy. Fools laugh because he reels
And weilds confusedly his infant will;
The wise man watching with a heart that feels
Says: “Cure for freedom’s harms is freedom still.”

What are you thankful for today?

I am thankful for freedom and for all the men and women who fought for our freedom.

index

How do we remember the men we’ve lost?
How can we tell them they’re still being missed?
That every day, especially on this crisp autumn day
Their memories still linger and they’re not forgotten
That what they’ve done are truly appreciated
Would wearing poppies and lighting candles do?

Lest we forget, lest we forget

Men of valour and courage going to war
Every generation, there are some reasons
Of why men waged wars against each other
We send them there, some still boys and girls
Not knowing whether they’d still come back
The experience they’ve got, we don’t really know
And when they come back, are they still whole?
Our heroes, our loved ones, their sacrifices

Lest we forget, lest we forget

And so we remember them
We appreciate what they’ve done
To our countries and to our freedom
Wars are ugly, wars are unfair and wars are ruthless
But then they are necessary sometimes
Let’s just hope that peace and understanding come

Lest we forget, lest we forget

Poetry Prompts Day 18 – OctPoWriMo 2016 – Senseless

ann-frank-quote

It is not enough
to talk of
senseless hatred
irrational violence
or senseless evil
in this world
no matter how hard
it may be
for us to understand
an absurd waste
of human lives
and total failure
we have to take
responsibility ourselves
no more empty promises
we have to see sense
stop the silliness
do something good
let there be peace

Since Thou Hast Given Me This Good Hope, O God
by Robert Louis Stevenson

SINCE thou hast given me this good hope, O God,
That while my footsteps tread the flowery sod
And the great woods embower me, and white dawn
And purple even sweetly lead me on
From day to day, and night to night, O God,
My life shall no wise miss the light of love;
But ever climbing, climb above
Man’s one poor star, man’s supine lands,
Into the azure steadfastness of death,
My life shall no wise lack the light of love,
My hands not lack the loving touch of hands;
But day by day, while yet I draw my breath,
And day by day, unto my last of years,
I shall be one that has a perfect friend.
Her heart shall taste my laughter and my tears,
And her kind eyes shall lead me to the end.

Oasis of Peace

bench1

The oasis of serenity when everything’s at peace. Blue sky with cotton like clouds, calm sea, green grass and trees and the island across my bench. Birds flying and singing above me, ah, this is heaven! The joy of being here, the freedom I feel of love and happiness. This is my favourite place when I want to be alone and commune with nature, when I want to say thanks for all the blessing that I have or when I want to drown my sorrow and pain, leave them here and move on with life. This is where I can find my peace, to remain whole and to be free. I may not be perfect, but this place is pure bliss.

Oasis of peace
Feeling of love and delight
Sitting on the bench

Is Peace One Day achievable? 100WCGU #190

animaatjes-peace-13841

Who will you make peace with?
Is it wrong to search my soul?
So I know what indeed is my role
When I wonder deep down its meaning
And forgiveness I am begging
When I pushed the cobwebs of lies
And each one has his lows and highs
Is it wrong to find atonement?
When there was a creepy silent?
For all who I’ve offended
Out with the truth blurted
For all who are suffering
And the tension it brings
For all who are in pain
Like being in chains
What’s clear is I want peace
All misgivings to decrease
